Stephan Hausmeister participated in Joseph Beuys’ Free International University (F.I.U.) at Documenta 6, Kassel (Germany) in 1977. He studied painting and printmaking at the University of Arts (UdK) in Berlin from 1980 – 87 and received travel grants from the Berlin Senate of Cultural Affairs in 1984 and 1988, which enabled him to work in Morocco. In 1989 and 1990 he received further artist’s grants from the Berlin Senate. Between 1991 and 1994, Hausmeister collaborated with Unwahr Gallery, Berlin establishing an international exchange programme.

In 1991, Hausmeister received the prestigious DAAD – Berliner Künstlerprogramm artist’s fellowship to live and work in London, with the support of the Goethe Institute and Whitechapel Art Gallery. Since that time, he has been based in the UK, working and exhibiting in Europe, the United States and China.

In 1995 Hausmeister set up Artistsprinting, the first large format digital print workshop for artists in the UK, at Southgate Studios, London.

Hausmeister has worked as visiting lecturer at the School of Creative Arts, University of Hertfordshire, UK, School of the Arts, Columbia University, New York and the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (USA). From 2003 – 2014 he worked as an independent artistic director and curator, organising events and exchange projects with European and Chinese artists, including performances with the Gao Brothers and Mad for Real (Cai Yuan and Jian Jun Xi).
